Every now and then someone or some organization ma Every now and then someone or some organization makes a list of the most influential work “gurus”. I recently saw one and as I clicked through the names and read many of the ideas they were promoting, I grew more and more concerned with the state of our workforce. While I don’t question the motives of these people, I do strongly disagree with much, if not most, of what they were saying simply because they lead to fragility not antifragility. As Nassim Taleb explained: “Some things benefit from shocks; they thrive and grow when exposed to volatility, randomness, disorder, and stressors and love adventure , risk, and uncertainty. Yet, in spite of the ubiquity of the phenomenon, there is no word for the exact opposite of fragile. Let us call it antifragile. Antifragility is beyond resilience or robustness. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better.” Are you fragile and easily shaken? Do you always feel let down by the advice and formulas give to you? You are fragile. Don’t you want to get better even when things around you get worse? This is why I’m putting together lists of contrarian advice. I literally click on one of these guru’s links, read what they have to say, and comment on it, and it just so happens to usually contradict. 😂 I’m now grateful to these lists. They have made my research simpler. Stop wasting time and money on inspirational things that are making you and your team fragile. I like to use Peter Drucker’s 5 Most Important Questions list, and it’s something we go back to as a team every week! Our best decisions are made when there’s team clarity over these 5 questions. I remember one example at the height of COVID-19 fear, when we decided to support clients by finding ways to aid their cashflow. It was very difficult. But we exist for a mission, and that mission means providing specific value to specific customers, so we find ways. All the rules, policies, best practices, compliance, and traditions must support the mission and bring great value to customers not the other way around. Focus on the fundamentals. Game Changer • As I prepare for a new year, I re Game Changer • As I prepare for a new year, I reflect on the year that was and the different events that affected us all. Was it a good year? Was it a bad year? I don’t know. It was a difficult year, for sure. It was very very tiring. It was also a life-altering year.
